Goodby Longwood, Hello Savanah

It’s time to leave the family. We packed up, took obligatory family pictures and headed out. We didn’t go far. Our first stop was Lawless Subs in Altamonte Springs to pick up a sub to share for on-the-road lunch.

Lawless has been the family’s go-to sub shop since Joe’s daughter Catherine discovered and adopted the place. They do make a good sub. And what I like is that they offer sliced bread as well as rolls. I prefer sliced bread sandwiches, rolls are too much bread.

Then we were off for Savannah. We took the Interstate in order to have some time exploring.

Savannah was a surprise. Not what I pictured at all. We stayed several miles outside at a hotel near the airport… they were having a price war and quite inexpensive; $89 a night with breakfast and parking included. The basic historic district hotels were twice as much.

This hotel seems to be run by amiable idiots.

Once we settled in the room we headed for the historic riverfront. All along the Interstate we had been driving alongside lowlands and swamplands. Somehow Savannah snuck in about a hundred feet of elevation along the river. The riverfront roads were hilly and cobblestone and very winding mostly one-way. No parking lots. We finally found a spot a block uphill and behind the riverfront buildings near some historic digs from the Civil War era.

The riverfront road is cobblestone with tracks running down the center. Sidewalks are a mix of stone, brick and concrete. All very uneven. The buildings, all old, had all kinds of steps up and down. No ramps. An OSHA-ADA inspector’s nightmare.

The last fifty feet to the waterfront has been developed as a modern park and brick walkway. A couple of dinner cruise paddlewheelers were lined up awaiting guests.

We ate at Barnie’s Oyster House, a colorful hole-in-the-wall spot about midway along the street.

Beers, shrimp for GG, oysters and fish chowder for me. Then a second dozen.

That about wraps it up from Savannah. We would like to spend an extra day here but we have a dinner date in Charlotte tonight.

      Thanks David,
It’s been much more interesting and educationally broadening than we expected.

We love Savannah. One time we did a walking tour of all the spots from “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil”.
Why aren’t I able to see your photos. I really missthose.
